Maxwell and Kleeman's Clinical Disorders of Fluid and Electrolyte Metabolism

The revised edition of Clinical Disorders of Fluid and Electrolyte Metabolism , 4th ed., 1987 (cited in Brandon-Hill ). Part I defines the physiologic basis for electrolyte traffic across membranes and identifies the mechanisms underlying the excretion and conservation of ions and water. Principles elaborated in Part I, in turn, become the skeleton giving structure to the first section of Part II, wherein the primary disruptions of normal ion and fluid metabolism are identified and dissected. In the second section of Part II, the principles of physiology, pathophysiology, and the clinical aspects of the primary electrolyte and fluid disorders give defining substance to those clinical settings and syndromes in which these disorders play critical roles.
