During the decades since the publication of the first edition of this handbook, more technical advances have occurred than in any other period of history. These developments have been primarily the result of the advent of the computer and computer simulation in solving complex problems. Most sections in this new editions have taken this into account and have included discussions of computer methods, applications, and pertinent references. In many cases, computer programs have been included to assist the designer in optimizing a study.
