The last several decades have witnessed an unprecedented development in experimental and analytical tools to engineer and examine surfaces that have been put through some tribological process. New coatings with harnesses at or above that of diamond are now routinely deposited and used in special applications, monolayer films protect surfaces from inadvertent contact, atomic scale tribological properties are routinely measured, and molecular dynamics calculations simulate lubrication, adhesion, wear and sub-surface damage. These advances have expanded our view of tribological processes and extended applications of data storage, microelectronic devices, gear lubrication, and biological implants. WOM 1999 addresses these issues by focusing on coatings, modeling, nano-scale processes and materials wear mechanisms.
