Preface Baeklund transformations have emerged over the past decade as an important tool in the study of a wide range of nonlinear partial differential equations in mathematical physics. A need has emerged for a single text that presents a compendium of the diverse applications of Backlund transformations and provides an acceptable underlying theory for the subject. This monograph attempts to meet that need.
