Description ▲
Solid acids have found uses as catalysts for many important reactions including the cracking of hydrocarbons, the isomerization, polymerization and hydration of olefins, the alkylation of aromatics and the dehydration of alcohols, etc. Systematic study of the correlations between catalytic activity and selectivity and the acidic properties of the catalyst surface (the amount, strength and tepye, Bronsted or lewis of acid sites) has to a greater or lesser extent enabled identification of the optimum catalyst in terms of these acidic properties. Why is it that seemingly neutral solid materials such as metal oxides sulfates, etc. show remarkable acidic properties as well as catalytic activity? Elucidation is being achieved through investigations of structure of acid centers, and by comparison with the kinetics of homogenous acid catalysis. it is hoped that this volume will be useful to both professional chemists and graduate students in the fields of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, petroleum chemistry, and catalysis and also those with an interest in acidic and basic properties on solid surfaces.
