Historical Foundations of Education: Bridges from the Ancient World to the Present

This book discusses education in the social, economic, political and religious context in which it developed, beginning with education in the time of the ancient Greeks.  The focus on "bridges", or connections from past to present, is emphasized throughout.  Connections are clearly explained in each chapter.  Tables summarize these connections, and the educators whose ideas we use today are profiled in the "Shapers of Education" feature used in each chapter. Discussion questions, a list of suggested activities, a list of annotated websites, suggestions for further reading, a timeline of significant dates, learning objectives, and "Shapers of Education" feature and tables.  This is a history of foundations text for undergraduate or graduate courses in the history of education, or the history of curriculum theory.
