Girish raghunath karnad is an eminent writer, screenplay writer, playwright, movie director and actor in kannada language. In the 1960s, he became famous as a playwright which also marked the coming of age of modern playwriting in kannada language. His fame can be compared to that of badal sarkar in bengali, vijay tendulkar in marathi and mohan rakesh in hindi. In 1998, he received the jnanpith award, which is the highest literary award in india. His plays are so popular that they have been translated into several other indian languages. He has been conferred the padma bhushan as well as padma shri by the government of india and has also won four filmfare awards.
