Wellington, New Zealand: The Cook Straight separates North Island from South Island in New Zealand, and connects the southern Pacific Ocean with the Tasman Sea. On the hook shaped peninsula of the North Island sits Wellington, the most southerly national capital city in the world.
Venice, Italy: Built on over 100 small islands in a shallow lagoon, this image shows the largest island where the main city is built. You can easily spot the Grand Canal that connects the train station in the northwest to St Mark’s Square in the south, but look closely to find the web of smaller canals.
Nouakchott, Mauritania: Nouakchott has rapidly grown from a tiny fishing village to the largest city in the Sahara Desert. Though nestled close to the Atlantic Ocean, it relies on subterranean reservoirs trapped in underground rock structures to supply water to its population of approximately 660,000 people.
The Cape Peninsula, South Africa: The Cape Peninsula, seen running north to south in this image, is some 31 miles long. Its southern extremity is the Cape of Good Hope, while the city of Cape Town sits at the northern end, beneath Table Mountain.
