When Malaysia achieved independence in 1957, many predicted that the country would never be stable or prosper economically. In these five essays, the Malaysian Prime Minister reflects on the successes and failures of government policy since independence. In particular, he identifies the way in which the New Economic Policy has, after some early problems and setbacks, ensured that the benefits of economic prosperity have not been confined to a small and sophisticated section of the elite, but have instead been widely shared among the Malaysian people.
