This volume is a special issue devoted to the materials and techniques of Northern European painting from the beginning of the fifteenth century to the middle of the sixteenth. It explores the material characteristics of Northern Renaissance painting, the relationship of style and technique in paintings of this period by Stephan Lochner, Rogier van der Weyden, Jan Gossaert, and Wolf Huber, and the interrelationships in the techniques of painters from some of the most important centers of artistic production in Northern Europe.
