The Social Dimension of Western Civilization, Fourth Edition(previously entitled Social History of Western Civilization), is a two-volume reader for Western Civilization courses. The essays in each volume deal with social history because the author believes that the most original and significant work of the past three decades has been done in this area and because some Western Civilization textbooks tend to slight social history in favor of the more traditional political, intellectual, and cultural history though this bias is changing.
