When the couple travels to the noisy but vibrant city to view Protima's legacy, they find their property in a terrible state of disrepair, a decaying ruin inhabited by squatters. Their lawyer, A. K. Dutt-Daster, advises them to sell it immediately--but Ghote detects a whiff of corruption and is determined to get to the bottom of it.
The couple steadfastly digs their heels in and refuses to sell--but the corruption extends way up the political ladder. Unable to trust anyone, they slowly become aware of a conspiracy to develop the nearby wetlands. And before they know it, Ghote and his wife are putting themselves in grave danger.
