CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and CHARLIE AND THE GREAT GLASS ELEVATOR

No film will ever, ever equal this fabulous book. The 1971 film with a cruel martinet version of Willie Wonka played by Gene Wilder, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, was bad; even the film's title gives away how the emphasis has shifted from the brave, if beleaguered, Charlie to the factory owner. However, the 2005 movie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with the creepily child-like Willie Wonka played by Johnny Depp was -- well, just disturbing. As Roger Ebert pointed out, the inevitable comparison to Michael Jackson will bring shudders to what should be a fairy tale.
