Eric Berne's best seller "Games People Play" brought the ideas of transactional analysis to the attention of millions of readers, but it wasn't until after his death in 1971 when some of his followers summarized the gist of his theories, that the entire edifice of his innovative approach to mental health emerged in the public mind. The reason for this was that Berne, a prolific writer, evolved transactional analysis over many years and book by book, each new work taking his theories another step along the road. Each of these books became a classic in its field, but none brought together in one volume the entire range of his ideas. Yet few will dispute that Berne was a better writer by far than any of those who followed in his footsteps; his pungent wit, his fresh and irreverent approach, and the ease with which he carried his scholarship have remained unmatched.
