Description ▲
Intended as a practical guide for all who may be required to undertake or manage the maintenance of masonry streuctures. It is aimed particularly at those whose training and experience has been directed more to design and construction than to maintenance and more to steel and concrete than to masonry. It deals with all the tasks which may fall to the maintenance engineer from the initial identification of defects and their diagnosis to their treatment and the monitoring of its cost effectiveness. It seeks to bring together as much information as possible concerning proven techniques and to illustrate these with actual case studies. It also details some of the latest relevant developments. It relates to civil engineering structures - bridges, viaducts, tunnels, culverts and sewers, retaining walls, wharves and quays, towers and shafts but not to buildings. Seperate chapters have been included in respect of other types of structure, such as tunnels, sewers and maritime works. Where appropriate, reference has been made to specific regulations, standards and codes of practice. Although the book is written largely on the basis of British experience, relating courses of remedial action to British Standards and practices, the philosophies and principles described should be of universal application.
