Dictionary of Music, The New International (Meridian)

This is a fine basic musical reference work, and one that approaches its subject from an American perspective, rather than with the usual British prejudices. It encompasses both classical music and some jazz, with entries that will satisfy simple questions and point the inquirer in the right direction for more complex ones. There's also a handy guide to musical terms in the back, with equivalents in English, German, Italian and French.
