Tiruray Justice: Traditional Tiruray Law and Morality

The Teduray (Tiruray) legal system is a thing of great elegance, and totally different from Anglo-American ones. Cooperative, rather than adversarial, it is highly effective in reconciling disputes and preventing violence, yet makes no use of either violence or coercive power. This book examines how the system works and why, illustrating every aspect with stories told by the people, and showing that it is based on their moral system that stresses every person continually scan their surroundings for how they can be helpful. It analyzes how the legal sages have authority that is real, but not based on power, and also discusses how the system is handicapped in dealing with changing needs and conditions.
