The Rise and Fall of British Liberalism, 1776-1988

This work covers the history of British Liberalism from the first flourishing of the doctrine in the later 18th-century, to the final dissolution of the Liberal party, to the Liberal Democrats in 1988. It sets the fortunes of the party and its problems in the context of its Conservative and Labour rivals and explores the internal political rivalries which were to prove so costly. Its focus is on liberalism rather than the Liberal party itself - within the intellectual currents of the time.
