Forced by her Sire’s illness into command of his forces in a disastrous battle with the Saxons, she flees to Denmark with a Viking fleet, forming a romantic attachment with its chieftain, Sigefert. Separated from him, forced to make her way alone, she rises to command of a Viking trading fleet to Byzantium, is forced into a gladiatorial fight by the Roman Emperor, prevails, and is able to escape to Denmark.
After an idyllic interlude with Sigefert, she and the other Vikings are mistakenly sentenced to death, forcing them to fight through to Britain. There they are captured as pirates, but prove their innocence, and Tara finally achieves the destiny foretold by her old Druidic gods, with Sigefert at her side.
