The accidental spiritual quest takes a darker turn. After four years of the U.S. Navy, the physical scars from Steeg Patterson's injuries were well-hidden. Emotionally, however, he was still relentlessly tormented by his continued need for Gracie. However many prayers must go unanswered before a man stops praying, Steeg was fairly certain he had satisfied the quota. It was time for him to get on with his life - forget all that had changed or had been lost, leave the service and return home. He would find where he had left off before Vietnam, pick up the pieces and catch up to everyone who had passed him by. It would be a return to a normal life.
