When a late night blaze destroys the apartment of Jenna Hansbrough, a beautiful, popular graduate student, the mayor of Chicago wants answers. A fire captain, his brother-in-law, died in the fire. The problem is that Jenna has disappeared, vanished without a trace or a simple good-bye. Detective Felicity Daniels and her partner, assigned to solve the mystery, quickly identify the prime suspect -- Joe Cutler, Jenna's mentor and graduate advisor. He was last seen with his protege following a celebration for Jenna receiving an offer to teach in California.
Yet even Joe doesn't know his role in Jenna's disappearance. Because when he awakens face down on his own living room floor the next morning, he can't remember what happened, at least not after the point he had one too many drinks. Normally, Joe avoids alcohol because experience shows he can lose control. That's why he's reluctant to share with Detective Daniels one puzzling fact -- he now has Jenna's cell phone.
More than anyone else Joe wants to find Jenna or find out what happened to her. They were, after all, very close.
