His End Game by R. B. Hilliard is the type of book you do not want to put down. The author illustrates a world that at first seems like that of an ordinary high-school girl. The normal ups and downs of such a transitional period are explored early in the novel as readers experience the teenage angst of Ellie, our heroine. Boyfriends, other girls’ boyfriends, sex, virginity, and more are all common themes in coming-of-age books. This book is different. Hilliard craftily lulls the reader into a false sense of comprehension as her book happily trundles along, and Ellie’s life is laid out in detail. As more of Ellie’s character is revealed, however, the narrative darkens—a broken home, absent parents, an indifferent guardian, and a timidity at high school that keeps her from a healthy social life. All of these begin to take shape and create a story. The book’s storyline takes a ninety-degree turn, showcasing Hilliard’s imagination and impish ingenuity. Exciting twists and turns, involving the older and untouchable Max and a billowing lineup of other characters, befall Ellie and her friends Piper and Joss. The steamy scenes, funny moments, scary and sad events, and unbelievable plot twists will leave you wanting more. The author plans on continuing the series with additional tales that are bound to astound.
