This study by the brother of Karl Menger retraces the development of the idea of surplus value among pre-Marxian socialists, emphasizing English and French theorists including Godwin, Hall, Thompson, Saint-Simon, Proudhon, Rodbertus, Blanc and LaSalle. Menger also broke new ideological ground in assigning to the state the responsibility of defending the right to subsistence, thereby anticipating modern state socialism. The 1899 edition reprinted includes a lengthy introduction and a bibliography by H.S. Foxwell.
