Description ▲
Andrew was an elementary school student who was puzzled by his frequent outbursts of anger over seemingly insignificant frustrations. Eventually, he was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, a diagnosis that finally made sense and fit all of his symptoms. In 8th grade, he wrote and illustrated this book to explain what it felt like to be him -- a child with explosive outbursts, wild mood swings, periods of deep anger, elation or depression beyond what was typical or explainable by what was going on around him. Since then, he has used this book as an introduction at each grade level to help his new teachers understand his disorder and, in essence, to understand him. The book has also been used by the local chapter of NAMI to help parents whose children have just received the same diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder. This book is written in a child's language, with a child's own illustrations to convey each of the emotions and states of Bipolar Disorder. It is not intended as a scientific treatise and does not contain treatment recommendations. It's purpose is to let other kids know they are not alone, and to let parents gain some insight into life as a child with bipolar disorder.
