The Suramgamasamadhi Sutra is one of the most important Mahayana Buddhist scriptures. It is ancient, probably composed close to the beginning of the first millennium CE. Its authorship is unknown but as an expression of Mahayanist spirituality it was accepted in India, its land of origin, as well as in China, Japan, Mongolia, and Tibet.
Available for the first time in English, this version includes a Foreword by Andrew Skilton, assessing the character and significance of Lamotte's work, and reviewing the more recent research of this genre. This translation will fill an important gap in English language sources for the study of Mahayana Buddhism, and opens up more of the work of the one of the premier scholars of Buddhism this century.
