Description

This book is a collection of talks presented at the International Symposium on "Exotic Nuclei" EXON2006 which was held in Khanty-Mansiysk Russia (Russia, west Siberia) during 17-22 July 2006. The International Symposium of Exotic Nuclei (EXON2006) was dedicated to the problems of producing and investigating nuclei far from the line of stability. The main goal of the Symposium was to discuss the latest results on the production and study of the properties of the lightest to heaviest nuclei, as well as, the plans for future joint investigations in the field of exotic nuclei. The big interest in the synthesis of new isotopes of the light elements could explain the numerous reports on this topic. In principle, in the region of neutron-rich isotopes of light elements the nucleon dripline has been reached. Principally new information was obtained for the neutron-rich nuclei close to the magic neutron numbers N = 20 and N = 28. It turned out that, what concerns their stability, the magicity of these nuclei was of no importance. New magic numbers N = 6, 16, and 32 were discovered. In the last few years the experiments on the synthesis of the new transfermium elements and the study of their properties have been really intensive. The search for new superheavy elements is being done in four leading laboratories - the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at JINR (Dubna), the National Center GANIL (France), GSI (Germany), and RIKEN (Japan). Nowadays unique techniques for the synthesis and investigation of the properties of exotic nuclei are being developed together with the realization of large accelerator projects for radioactive ion beams. The creation of the new radioactive ion beam factories needs big investments, and they can be built only with the support of international collaborations.
