America was deep into World War II in 1944, and it was at Anzio, Italy, during a night counterattack, that a shell from a German Tiger tank struck Sergeant John B. Worley in the chest. In the darkness, the critically injured Worley was pronounced dead. One brave soldier insisted, however, that John's body be carried off the battlefield to the first aid station a couple of miles away so he could receive a proper burial.
