China and the Challenge of Economic Globalization: The Impact of WTO Membership

China's entry into the World Trade Organization represented a major step in ongoing reform efforts that have had profound effects on various sectors of the Chinese economy, trading activities, and different industries. In addition, as the fifth largest trading nation and the largest Foreign Direct Investment host country in the world, China is expected to have a major influence in future rounds of WTO trade negotiations. This multidisciplinary study evaluates the implications of China's WTO membership on the nation and provides policy guidance for those doing business in China or working with the Chinese economy. Using up-to-date data and information, the contributors examine: (1) the overall evolution of China's economy and China's performance and strategy with regard to WTO commitments; (2) the effects of WTO membership and globalization on the Chinese economy; (3) China's financial reforms, labor laws, welfare issues, and other policy developments; (4) opportunities and challenges facing China's industries today; and (5) the role of multinational corporations.
