Thinking Algebraically The word “algebra” is not commonly heard in elementary classrooms, but the mathematical investigations in these grades frequently include elements of algebraic thinking/reasoning, and building students’ algebra skills.

To address the call for “Algebra for All” from NCTM, this classroom-tested, standards-based program helps elementary students develop a strong foundation in algebra reasoning to build the skills necessary for success in Algebra in the secondary grades.

• Give students the opportunity to practice and apply algebraic thinking skills through sets of theme-based activities.
• Focus instruction using activities based on familiar concepts such as numbers, operations, spatial sense, patterns, and functions.
• Pace each set of activities to the needs of your students.
• Monitor student progress with Informal Assessment, Self-Assessment, and Formal Assessment.
• Supplement any math curriculum or basal textbook to ensure your students develop algebra skills.
