With the collapse of the American military mission in Southeast Asia in the mid-1970s, thousands of Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Laotian refugees began their long and perilous journey to a new and uncertain future in the United States. Ronald Takaki is Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of California at Berkeley and is himself the grandson of Japanese immigrants.
