Optimization of Large Structural Systems (NATO Science Series E: (closed))

Structural optimization deals with the optimal design of all systems that consist, at least partially, of solids that are subject to stresses and/or deformations. Because of the increasing need to optimize discretized systems with many elements, the optimization of large structural systems is becoming one of the most important disciplines in all branches of technology, including aerospace, structural, mechanical, civil and naval engineering, building science, energy technology and biomechanics. Applications range from space vehicles, long-span bridges and motor cars to artificial organs and sporting equipment, to mention only a few examples.
