Description

For use by students in the classroom or on their own, this two-volumes-in-one textbook incorporates a teaching method which has proved effective over years of practical use. Each of the 35 lessons in the book introduces about 25 Chinese characters, or "kanji," until the characters studied by Japanese elementary school students are learned. Drill sentences are provided to give the students extensive familiarity with each character in its full range of uses, including the essential vocabulary of the common compound words in which it occurs. Several reading drills in "katakana" and "hiragana" are also provided. The first section of the book introduces modern Japanese orthography, gives Romanized versions (showing accent and juncture) and English translations of the lessons and drill sentences, and provides vocabulary and grammar notes to the lessons. The second part of the book contains the text lessons and drill sections in Japanese writing.
