Elementary Japanese Volume One is designed for people beginning their study of the Japanese language at the basic level. It covers the first semester of college-level beginner's Japanese, and contains 14 lessons, each representing one week's instruction. It is based on the more traditional approach of segmenting the language to be acquired according to structures rather than functions, and gives grammatical explanations in enough detail to be used as a reference. Intended for use in college courses, Elementary Japanese Volume One can also be used for individual study as it consists of a dialogue, usage notes, grammar notes, exercises, new kanji and explanation, and new vocabulary.
