Modern Hebrew Literature

This work is not intended to be a history of modern Hebrew literature. While the material it investigates is exclusively literary, it is primarily a study of the socio-historical forces which have motivated Jewish life during the last two centuries. . . . It regards modern Hebrew literature as the most faithful and comprehensive record of Jewish life during this period. The major trends and values discernible in its evolution are the intimate, often passionate expression of the tangled problems which have haunted Jewry in this epoch.
