Description ▲
Dating back at least a thousand years, stenciling on fabric is enjoying a great resurgence today. This guide demonstrates not only how to adorn fabric with stencils but also how to quilt the designs, adapt them for needlepointing, and make them up into piped or corded pillows or curtain tiebacks. Photos also show stenciled towels, a tote bag, sweatshirts, and napkins. There are some charming florals, lovely geometrics inspired by knot gardens, and a smattering of animals, but by and large the designs themselves are generally superior to the finished products shown here. Novices take note: although templates are included for all the patterns, many of the designs are extremely intricate and will require some practice to cut the stencil accurately. --Amy Handy
