Twentieth-century Korean fiction has managed to thrive in perhaps the World's most adverse literary environment. From the Japanese occupation in 1910, and the outlawing of the Korean language, to the division of the country after World War II and the subsequent civil war, dictatorship, and censorship, the literary arts have not only survived but flourished. Each period of crisis and adversity has occasioned the emergence of a new generation of writers, with new outlooks, new voices, and new approaches to character, plot, and dialogue. Flowers of Fire presents English translations of twenty short stories which help to illustrate the progression of Korean literature during the period 1910-1960. In this revised edition, Peter H. Lee has refined many of the translations and replaced several stories with three new ones. The collection as a whole gives a vivid impression of the diversity and vitality of Korean fiction in the twentieth century.
