Contos (Portuguese Edition)

In his Contos (short stories), Eça de Queirós wrote to escape the rigid self-imposed rules of his realism, giving the reader a much broader range of stories than are found in his novels. Instead of writing about contemporary people and issues, in these stories Eça also explores myth, religion and morality; from explorations of how Adam and Eve ‘evolved’ in a parody of human evolution, to a nursemaid’s sacrifice of her infant son to save the infant prince in her charge, to the effect that the discovery of treasure has on three brothers.
