Eusébio Macário is a pharmacist in the city of Basto. A widower, he has two grown children, José Fístula and Custódia. His good friend, Father Justino, has a lover, Felicia, whose brother, Bento, has returned to Portugal after becoming rich in Brazil over several years. Bento falls for Custódia, who marries him for his money, and the couple move to Porto. Felicia soon follows, abandoning Father Justino, who finds another lover. In Porto, Felicia meets and eventually marries José Fiístula.
