Each section includes a regiment history, the service records of the regiment's officers, histories of the companies in each regiment, and the service records of the troops in each of the companies.
Compilation, editing, and publication of North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865: A Roster began in 1961 under the direction of the North Carolina Confederate Centennial Commission. In 1965 the project was transferred to the State Department of Archives (now the North Carolina Office of Archives and History).
