Systemic Disease and the Nasal Airway (Rhinology and Sinusology)

Recently, there has been a preoccupation by otolaryngologists with nasal and sinus disorders because of a major change in the manner in which nasal and sinus disorders have been detected and cared for. Much of this interest has been stimulated by the development of nasal and sinus endoscopy by European investigators and of CT imaging. This has created an increasing pursuit in the understanding of the pathophysiology of nasal and sinus disease. With this excitement, there has been a demand for as much knowledge as possible within the field of rhinology and sinusology. This book was written to provide a comprehensive review of systemic diseases that have important influences on nasal function. The purpose of the book is twofold: first, to show the effects of systemic diseases on the nasal airways so that the effects of these diseases on the nose and paranasal sinuses can be better understood and treated; second, to provide a reference for non-otolargyngologists describing a group of systemic diseases that may be first diagnosed by their nasal manifestations. The text focuses on a group of systemic diseases of various categories that are often not treated in a comprehensive manner in most otolaryngology or rhinology texts, and whose treatment in general medical texts often lacks in-depth discussion of the rhinologic aspects of the disease.
