Description ▲
First published by the Indiana Historical Society in 1996, Peopling Indiana contains more than 50 ethnic groups. This volume is the capstone of an ethnic history project launched by the Indiana Historical Society in 1989. The lavishly illustrated book contains thirty-one chapters touching on many of the past and present ethnicities that populated the Hoosier State, followed by a thorough index. The book also includes historic photographs, maps, tables and charts, and detailed footnotes. An introductory essay by John Bodnar, professor of history and co-director of the Center for Study of Memory and History at Indiana University, places the ethnic history of Indiana within the context of ethnic history in America. An appendix by George Rose, dean and director, Ohio State University, Marion, Ohio, places Hoosier ethnicity within the ethnicity of the states of the Old Northwest. Reprinted in partnership with the Indiana Humanities Council with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
