Description

Katherine A. Kendall has drawn from the extensive archives of the Council on Social Work Education and the University of Minnesota's Social Welfare Library to tell the story of the creation and first twenty years of CSWE. Part one recounts how confrontation gave way to cooperation between the National Association of Schools of Social Administration and the American Association of Schools of Social Work to launch CSWE in 1952. In part two Kendall discusses the struggles and accomplishments of the Council in its first twenty years, including events that occurred in her tenure as executive director. During this time the Council focused its efforts on the quantity and quality of personnel working in social welfare--quantity by concentrating on recruitment efforts nationwide and quality by honing a curriculum that would produce skilled social work professionals. Throughout the text Kendall quotes extensively from key sources, providing keen insight to the forces that were defining social work as a profession in the middle of the last century. More than an account of the organization's history, this text gives a broad-minded perspective on central themes in social work education today.
