Bioceramics (Key Engineering Materials)

The bioceramics discipline has evolved into a major field of study with great implications for man's future health and well-being. The "Bioceramics-14" monograph contains more than 160 papers with representations from over 20 countries. The topics range from the totally inert, load-bearing materials, such as alumina, zirconia, silicone nitride and diamond to bioreactive materials such as the calcium phosphates and bioglasses. The latter have great potential for aiding in grafting defects, bone repair, drug-delivery, and implant-fixation to living tissues. The book centres on the following research categories: calcium-phosphate ceramics, cellular and tissue-repair studies with bioactive glasses, cements and composites, dental and orthopaedic applications, and tribological performance of ceramic bearings, including ceramic knee-joint replacements, reflecting the continuing development of this application.
