Jerusalem: To Know By Living

In the 1990's, American painter Anthony Dubovsky visited Jerusalem and found himself drawn to the historic neighborhood of Mea She'arim, whose people follow traditional ways. Soon he had settled into drawing the people, and they had settled into accommodating him. The haredim of Mea She'arim inspire passionate debate at every point on the political and cultural spectrum, but Dubovsky sketched them outside the argument. A sense of mutual pleasure and honesty flows back and forth between the drawings and their subjects. Jerusalem: To Know By Living follows the ordinary life of a neighborhood, revealing its people in all their pious intention, earthy reality and dreams of the transcendent.
