Though granted a guaranty of safe conduct by the Emperor himself, to appear before the Roman Catholic "Council of Constance" and defend his writings and teachings, John Huss was taken prisoner and cruelly abused. After a mockery of a trial he was convicted of heresy and on July 6, 1415 was burned at the stake. This book is a moving eye-witness account written by one of the Roman Catholic officials who accompanied Huss during the ordeal, and was greatly influenced by his conduct and his testimony.
