Featured reports are by G. T. Beauregard, General, CSA and U. S. Grant, Major General, USA. Other reports are by Generals Braxton Bragg (CSA), W. T. Sherman (USA), D. C. Buell (USA), and Lieutenant William Gwin (USN) commanding the gunboat Tyler. Also included is Special Orders No. 8, which set the Confederate Army of the Mississippi in motion, dispatches between Beauregard and Grant, and a report of casualties. Finely reproduced illustrations include three period maps (including a central map of the battlefield), six portraits, and etchings of seven battlefield scenes. Preface and notes by John F. Wakefield.
