Description

This is the autobiography of Margarete Mendelsohn, who as a small child came face to face with Adolf Hitler and escaped from the horrors of the concentration camp to safety in Britain, while many of her friends, relatives and contemporaries died horrific deaths at his hands. When we think of history, we tend to think of the battles, the politicians, the great people and the economic movements. But history is made by the unknown people, who are so rarely recorded. Here is the story of an innocent, somebody who had no idea what was happening, and the bewildering events that transported her from her life in Germany to a new country full of strange people speaking a different language. It is in these stories that we find the reality of life in those days, and Margarete’s words bring it vividly home, just what it was like to live in those days, how people changed and how the world went on. The experience of the ordinary people in the run up to war is riveting as it shows us how people coped, and slowly came to the realisation that the unthinkable was actually happening. Today, more than seventy years later, we must not forget what happened in Germany because it is still happening in other countries around the globe.
