Our Daily Bread: A Novel

For people who live in highly developed countries today, it is difficult to imagine a time when all a family's thoughts and energies were concentrated on putting bread on the table. The author paints a vivid and detailed picture of the earlier battle for subsistence. The scene is the 'selko', a backwoods region of northeastern Finland in the depression years of the 1930s.
