Crossing the Expressway: Poems from the Open Road

This collection of hitchhiking poems is the Pilgrim's Progress of a road devotee, written throughout the author's 16-year hitchhiking odyssey from 1974 to 1990, when he met his next teacher (and married her). Wing introduces the poems with an essay on the spiritual and mythic dimensions of traveling by thumb, and illustrates them with found art from the highwayside. Pertinent quotations from the great poets accompany him on his journey through sections titled Eastbound, Southbound, Westbound and Northbound.
