Overview of UMTS

The global marketplace has turned its attention toward Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). Commonly referred to as Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA), UMTS is a third generation solution that includes existing services like voice and circuit-based services, as well as the new and exciting world of packet data. The launch of UMTS services will see the evolution of a new, "open" communications universe, with participants from many sectors (including providers of information and entertainment services). In short, UMTS creates a platform to converge the different worlds of speech, data services and the Internet to create a global market for mobile multimedia! This course offers an eLearning experience of UMTS and discusses the broad scope of UMTS, its characteristics, its features and its evolution from second generation architecture. It also provides the student with a "sampler," which draws the attention of the students to various areas of UMTS such as the access network, core network, services from voice to multimedia, and the future of UMTS
